Tired of the usual food Chinese, Japanese or Western? Well, I felt like that in one afternoon and decided to get something off the beaten track - the Egyptian food! A little more than another world? I enjoyed this meal hidden Altazzag unique Egyptian restaurant in the streets of Kampong Glam.
Altazzag is Arabic for fresh. And what a “fresh” knowledge this is! The restaurant occupies a little two-storey shophouse building along the very narrow street of Haji Lane. Notice the hookahs in the window? You may smoke shisha here too. This is one of those restaurants you would notice but hesitate going in for a meal due to the exotic cuisine
In other words, it’s perfect for the days once you’re in the mood for something truly different.
Hummus (chickpea dip) is a starter, not on any menu in the Middle East. It was here a smooth and without lumps. I think it does not taste too heavy and rich, with only a slight hint of lemon and garlic. It is perfect for a dip pita bread that is served alongside, but a little greasy.
A number of meat dishes such as kebabs available. We opted for a super special place. This blend of grilled chicken, fish, lamb and beef is perfect for someone who just wants to try a little anything.
The dish is covered with a white cream sauce and red hot sauce covered. I'm not sure what stopped the white sauce, but I know that a special sauce "secret" that makes every day fresh. The hot sauce is unlike any other I've tasted the food - very tasty, with a flavor that explodes in your mouth. It is a shame that some of the meat is cooked, otherwise it would have made the dish even more fun.
We like the corners of the potato, which are undoubtedly adapted to local tastes. If you order this dish, be sure to ask for hot sauce!
On the drinks menu, you have your usual tea, juices, and Milo and Nescafe! But we are not on the usual things, are we? What sounds most intriguing of the three "Egyptian healthy beverages." Are We tested the Sahleb, which is a drink made from coconut milk. It tastes sweet and creamy and goes well. Slurp!
Turkish coffee is served, which is not surprising, since it is the most common form of coffee in the Middle East. The first thing that comes to mind is the unusual dark brown with a frothy layer on top. There is a strong smell and taste very rich, even richer than the traditional coffee available at places like Old Town. Suffice it to say that I love the Turkish coffee. Rich with something that can only mean that a lot of coffee was used. In fact, there is a fine powder texture for coffee. It's a good idea to allow the dust to settle before drinking.
I really enjoy is a unique advantage Altazzag even cooking in the Middle East is not something that can easily adapt. My main purpose in coming here was to try something different, and the restaurant is probably in this one. We did not dare second level, but I heard that the guests can sit on the floor and eating tables, similar to key concepts and Lagnaa Brew. You need to reserve seats in advance, call home.
Personally I prefer the tables and chairs to sit down just up the street. He probably feels like a dining room overlooking the street in Cairo. One last thing: the restaurant is not responsible for service and GST. Yay!
